Local Union 696 and its signatory contractors have dedicated many thousands of dollars and instructor man-hours to the training of our apprentices. There is a joint board of union members and contractor representatives that meets monthly to review and set up the curriculum for the training of all Local 696's apprentices and journeymen.

During their five year training period, an apprentice must have 10,000 hours of field-related training along with a four year correspondence course from Penn State University that covers subjects from basic job safety to advanced hydraulic calculation. All of these courses are revised on a yearly basis to stay abreast of the ever changing fire protection field. To further assure a complete knowledge of the fire sprinkler field, they attend weekly classes at Local 696's Training Facilities. When their apprenticeship is complete, journeymen fitters then attend upgrade classes for backflow prevention, hazwoper training and many other advanced courses in the fire safety field. By attending these classes on their own time, journeymen members of Local 696 exhibit a continued dedication to the fire safety profession.
