Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union No. 9 represents over 2,100 highly skilled plumbers, pipefitters, welders and HVAC service technicians in the Central New Jersey area.

We currently have a signatory contractor base that numbers in excess of 400, including the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA), Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors Association (ARCA), and Independents, who perform all facets of construction and maintenance in the Mechanical Contracting Industry.

Our contractors and our craft persons are respected for their QUALITY, SAFETY, and RELIABILITY. This comes from performing high quality work on time and within budget. We at Local 9 earn our reputation one job at a time, and we take pride in EVERY job we do.

Local 9 and its Signatory Contractors currently invest over $740,000 annually in our training programs for apprentices and journeypersons. This joint investment allows us to employ experienced technical instructors and maintain state-of-the-art training facilities, which utilize the latest technology and equipment.

Another key to our success is a solid partnership between our membership and our contractors. Dependable, competent craftpersons deserve good wages. Our union and contractors negotiate fair collective bargaining agreements that assure our members receive good wages and fair treatment, including health insurance, pensions, and other benefits. This harmonious relationship helps to ensure that our customers get what they're paying for and deserve.

The Industrial Advancement Program that the membership of Local 9 has adopted proved to be an asset to our contractors as well as our members. Organizing, Advertising, Educating, and Job-Targeting are all part of what makes the Industrial Advancement Program so effective. Through the Targeted-Job Funding Plan, we are approaching a hundred million dollars worth of work that has been awarded to our signatory contractors, and over ten million dollars in wages and benefits has been recorded to date from these projects. The success of this program alone has resulted in an increased amount of hours for our Local's membership and rejuvenated our contractors' interest in the competitive world of bidding.

Through Organizing, Advertising, and Educating, we have developed a Quality Contracting Agenda better known as "Best Value Bidding". Gerald M. Waites of O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue was instrumental in helping Local 9 develop this approach of awarding contracts. Reaching out to several government entities and explaining the benefits of doing business in this not so new, but cost efficient way has led to several agreements with federal and municipal agencies. The failure of the low bid system is now being replaced by this innovative way to award contracts.
